Sunder M. Gehi

August 25, 1946June 5, 2019

Sunder M. Gehi, age 72, of Tampa, Florida passed away on Wednesday June 5, 2019.

He was born August 25, 1946 in Karachi, India, the son of Menghraj and Rukmani Gehi. Sunder grew up in Nairobi and Bombay with his parents and siblings. He earned an undergraduate degree in law in India and a masters degree in engineering in the United States. He immigrated to Flushing, Queens in 1970 and started a job in advertising. One year later, he married his wife Geeta, in Bombay, and brought her back to Queens to start a new life. A few years later their first child, Pooja was born. Soon thereafter, Sunder secured a job as a packaging engineer with Johnson & Johnson, which was a major achievement in his life. He and his wife relocated to Somerville, New Jersey, where his next daughter, Kajal was born. Sunder soon moved his family to Canton, Connecticut, where they lived until 1986. One of the many things that he accomplished in his work with J&J was his invention of the dissolvable surgical screw, which impacted the face of healthcare in the 1980’s. Another was his invention of the circular packaging for ortho tri cyclen, or birth control, which was revolutionary. In 1986, Sunder and his family moved to Tampa, Florida where he continued his work with J&J and where his daughters grew up. Eventually, they went on to earn their own degrees and start their own careers in different parts of the country. Sunder’s achievements shaped the lives of his family members and friends in countless and important ways. He spent his entire life taking care of the people who he loved. He was, quite simply, as good a man as you could ever know. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Geeta Gehi; daughters, Pooja Gehi (Jacob Rolls) and Kajal Gehi; brothers, Kishin Gehi (Radha), Mohan Gehi (Roshan) and Gopal Gehi (Geeta); and sister, Kamal Subbiah (A. Subbiah). Sunder is also survived by many loving family and friends.

Being his nephew living in India, i really did not spend a lot of time with Sunder uncle . But what i remember vividly is his love for barbecue. He was meticulous with his cooking, following his 'secret' recipe and it was delicious. I also remember is famous catch phrase-jalso...which means to have fun. Sunder uncle loved having a good celebration...and boy could he dance.
Love you Sunder uncle. May the Jalso continue up in heaven.

Sunder,Pappan and I started our journey in the USA together 50 years back.
Together we faced the initial challenges of settling down in a land away from home. Fun loving Sunder with his humorous banter and a great attitude towards these new experiences of finding our place in this new home surely helped us tide over in this new life!
So many fond memories of our 'mauj masti' times together!
Words fail me in expressing our deep sadness at the passing away of Sunder who we will always remember as one one of God's good human beings..
Our hearts go out to Geeta and the girls as we offer our condolences for this great loss!
Farewell dear soul, go on to the lotus feet of the lord where you shall find peace, love and light for evermore!!!!🕉🕉🙏🙏❤️❤️
