Theresa Mary (Mele) Spencer, 87, of Tampa, passed away peacefully at her home in Tampa Friday July 11, 2014. She was born January 21, 1927 in Gary, Indiana. Also formerly of Merrillville and Crown Point, Indiana, Theresa retired from US Steel Gary Works and moved to Florida in June of 1992. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Justina Mele; husband, Thomas E. Spencer; brothers, Bernard and Joseph Mele and sister, Mary (Mele) Scalzetti. Theresa is survived by her daughter Terry Spencer of Tampa and sons Thomas “Butch” Spencer of DeMotte, Indiana and Tim Spencer, also of Tampa. Grandchildren Mark and Tina Spencer of Crown Point, Indiana, and several great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by her nieces Patty Scalzetti and Bunny Goers, and nephews Dominick Scalzetti, Robert Mele and Joseph Mele; and a close circle of family friends who are very dear to us.
Theresa loved decorating for the holidays, her collection of dolls and other unique objects of interest, beauty and humor. She also loved animals, especially her “grand-doggers” Paris and Nicole, who she provided with treats and kind words while they offered her company and comfort. A lifelong lover of music, she was a member of the US Steel Chorus for several years, traveling to Pittsburgh, PA to perform with the Gary Works choir during the holidays. She enjoyed listening to old Italian standards, the great tenors, big bands and even the Beatles, acknowledging a few years ago that “those boys were pretty good.”
