She was a lifelong Texan known for her sweet and loving spirit as well as her kind and giving nature.
Born on April 2, 1943, in Taylor, Texas, she was the only child of Willie and Elizabeth (Blad) Mikeska. Her early life was marked by the profound sacrifice of her father, who was lost aboard the USS Indianapolis during WWII when she was only three years old. In his absence, her uncle, Joe Mikeska, became a devoted father figure, guiding her with love throughout her life.
Dorothy shared an extraordinary bond with her mother; the two were inseparable and truly did everything together. Whether they were traveling across the great state of Texas or attending family celebrations, they cherished every moment spent in each other’s company. In her youth, Dorothy spent weekends in Taylor playing Monopoly with her cousins and visiting her Uncle Joe and Aunt Blanche. Dorothy’s life was defined by this deep devotion to her family and the joy she found in their gatherings.
A woman of deep faith, she was baptized and confirmed at Palm Valley Lutheran Church. She graduated from Round Rock High School in 1961 as part of a close-knit class of just 43 students. Following graduation, she moved to Austin, where she would make her home for the next 60 years. After earning her business degree from Nixon-Clay Business College, she began a career of service with the State Library of Texas. She was a dedicated and loyal employee, retiring after more than 30 years of excellence. She was also a lifelong member of the S.P.J.S.T. Society and was very proud of her Czech and Swedish heritage.
While reserved by nature, her life was rich with music and joy. A talented pianist, she shared her gift by performing at the Strait Music Company showroom on weekends. As a devoted fan of Elvis Presley, one of her fondest memories was the thrill of seeing "The King" perform live in concert. She was also a passionate supporter of the University of Texas Longhorns and had a deep love for animals, especially her miniature toy poodle, Mimi.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Elizabeth (Blad) Mikeska; her grandparents, Joe and Francis Mikeska and Axel and Esther Blad; and her uncle and aunt, Joe and Blanche Mikeska. She is survived by many family and friends who will miss her sweet and loving presence.
