Eldon Hengst, age 89, of Bastrop, Texas, was welcomed into the comforting arms of Jesus on August 19, 2022, at Silver Pines Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Ann Bittner, and a brother and a sister: Erwin Hengst and Allyne Krueger. He is survived by his younger brother, Jim Hengst, his daughter, Susan Egan, his son-in-law, Patrick Egan, and two grandchildren, Sean Egan, and Shannon Egan along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Eldon was born in Thorndale, Texas to Max and Amanda Hengst. He grew up on their family farm where he was taught a robust work ethic, which he carried throughout his life. After he served in the US Naval Reserves, he was drafted from Blinn College as a star football player into the US Army. Part of his tour of duty was in Germany where he found his roots and learned about his cultural heritage.
Upon his return to the United States, he eventually found a lucrative career at Taylor Office Equipment during which time he was offered ownership with two partners. He and Mary Ann owned this cutting-edge office machine sales and repair business for many years. He built lasting relationships with many central Texas businesses through his entrepreneurial spirit and outgoing personality. Upon retiring, he remained active by taking on a volunteer government position as a consultant assisting farmers in developing sustainable agricultural methods.
Eldon had a lifetime love of coin collecting, woodworking, and genealogy. He and Mary Ann searched far and wide for genealogical clues in libraries and cemeteries. He even wrote to remote relatives and Lutheran churches in Germany inquiring about his ancestors who possessed information of the Hengst Coat of Arms discovering that the Hengst indeed are royalty.
Even as his health failed in his last days, he was always making new friends and expressing empathy to others he met along the way. The family would like to express sincere thanks to all the caregivers, particularly Bec’s Blessing in Giddings, Texas. We are eternally grateful.
Visitation will be Friday 26, 2022 from 5pm - 7pm at Condra Funeral Home. Service will be Saturday August 27, 2022 at 2pm at St. Paul Lutheran with burial following at Taylor City Cemetery.
