Jimmie was born in Union, Mississippi on August 6th, 1943 to Homer Blackwell and Eleanor Adelle Chaney but calls Taylor, Texas his home. He graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a Bachelor of Science and went on to get his Master’s of Business Administration from Oklahoma City University. His military education consists of NCO Leadership School, NCO Academy, Squadron Officer’s School, Air Command and Staff College, and Air War College.
He enlisted in the Air Force in February of 1961 and was a communications center specialist until 1974. Lt Col Blackwell was selected from the Airman Education and Commissioning Program and graduated as an Honor Graduate of Officer Training School in March 1976. Through his 31-year military career he was stationed at Bergstrom AFB, Offutt AFB, Ramstein AFB, Osan AFB, Keesler AFB, Tinker AFB, Scott AFB in, MacDill AFB, Kunsan Air Base, and the Pentagon. Lt. Col Blackwell’s decorations include the Meritorious Service medal with six oak leaf clusters and the Combat Readiness Medal. After dedicating those 31 years of his life to the Air Force, he went on to work for the State of Texas and retired after 10 years.
While Jimmie loved his country and being a Lieutenant Colonel, his friends meant the world to him and his family was the center of his life, especially his grandchildren. He prided himself in being “papaw” to all of his grandchildren and their friends and loved to pick up all of the kids for ice cream and let them swim in his pool. He was very involved in his grandchildren’s lives and that was the most important thing to him. He also loved to help members of his community and would give you the shirt off his back if you said you needed it.
Lastly, Jimmie loved his airplane, flying was his true passion. We will miss him every single day, but find solace knowing he left this earth doing what he loved. Jimmie will always live on through the many memories we have of him and he would want us all to share these stories about him for years to come.
