Nellie Elizabeth Davidson Steger, born on December 9, 1936, in Belton, Texas, passed away peacefully at home on February 17, 2026. Nell was one of eight children born to Willie Dean Davidson and Myrtle Tennessee Montgomery Davidson. Raised in a hardworking farm family, she learned early the value of perseverance and family as her father moved them from one farm to the next in search of opportunity.
Nell spent her early school years in Friendship, Texas, before the family settled in Granger, where she graduated in 1955. During high school, she was a majorette, drum major and played the flute in the band. Following graduation, she attended Nixon-Clay Business School before beginning her professional career in Houston with Texaco Oil Company.
Nell later moved to Austin and went to work for the Texas Parks Board (now Texas Parks and Wildlife). During this time, she met Lloyd Steger, who was working as a car salesman. The introduction came courtesy of Nell’s nephew, Bill Davidson — and the rest, as they say, is history. As Lloyd would put it “In 1960 I sold this girl from Granger a car, and we have been together ever since.”
Through Western Auto’s managerial assistance program, their journey took them to Houston where they welcomed two beautiful daughters. In 1964, an opportunity arose to purchase a Western Auto store back in Taylor, which they owned and operated together until 1971 at which time Nell transitioned to bookkeeping for Care Parts Center until 1980.
In 1971, Nell and Lloyd purchased a Victorian home built in 1888 on Lake Drive. Their love for historic preservation led them to showcase the home on the 1976 Bicentennial Home Tour, as well as two additional Christmas home tours. Nell was instrumental in supporting Taylor’s heritage and was one of the founders of the Taylor Conservation and Heritage Society. During her time with the organization, efforts were made that preserved the historic landmarks of First Taylor National Bank building and Taylor Paint and Hardware.
In 1980, Nell’s entrepreneurial spirit led them to purchase a Merle Norman store which she relocated to Sixth and Main, opening Collections Unique Boutique, a cornerstone of downtown serving the women of Taylor for 20 years.
Following the sale of the boutique, Nell and Lloyd built a home on Lake Travis, where they enjoyed nearly 10 years of retirement before returning to Taylor in 2010, the community they always considered home.
Throughout her years in Taylor, Nell was an active member of the Junior Women’s Study Club, the New Century Club, and the Taylor Garden Club. Nell was a lifetime member of the Church of Christ and was dedicated to her faith and to her relationship with Jesus. Lloyd credits Nell for single handedly bringing her family to Christ and presenting the gospel of salvation. A selfless hostess, Nell found great joy in gathering family and friends. Whether at the lake, at church, or around her dining table, she was always the last to sit down, focused on everyone else.
In her later years, Nell faced Alzheimer’s disease with grace, never losing her deep love for her family. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Generations Hospice for their compassionate care and support in allowing Nell to remain at home in her final days.
Nell was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Dean Davidson and Myrtle Tennessee Montgomery Davidson; great-nephew Jeff Davidson, her brothers Dub (Catherine), Johnny (Jean), James (Betty), and Harley Davidson; her sisters Maxine (Sonny) Hutchison, Joye (Jack) Gold, and Margaret (Marvin) Brown; sister-in-law Gayle Cokendolpher and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, Lloyd Steger; her daughters Sabrina (James) Aunspaugh and Stacy (Kevin) Roznovak; her granddaughters Lindsey (Steve) Willingham, Kelsey (Nick) Meza, Karyn (Jeff) Morris, and Katelyn (Wyatt) Townsend; her six great-grandchildren Hayes, Walker, Mila, Penelope, Summer, and Tatum; and her in-laws Charlie (Jodie) Steger, Darryl Cokendolpher, Shirley Davidson, and Frieda Davidson.
Visitation will be held at Condra Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 20, 2026, with services to follow at 2:00 p.m. Burial will take place at Granger City Cemetery.
Nell will be remembered for her steadfast faith, her dedication to family, her commitment to community, and the enduring legacy of love she leaves behind.
