Veronica (Michalka) Touchstone was born in Cameron, Texas on October 18, 1927. She came from a large family; Margaret, Teresa, Ann, Gertrude, and Veronica (the youngest girl); George, Albert, Lawrence, and Joe were the brothers. She met Gilbert and they were married on June 28,1958. She became mother to Debbie, Nancy and Renee and was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Taylor for 54 years and was a strong believer in a Catholic education. She sent her daughters and her two grandsons, Carter and Cullen Sakewitz, to St. Mary's School in Taylor, where she was often a substitute teacher.
She used to sew our clothes, and spent many hours at the sewing machine, making pillows and curtains. At night if the phone was busy, it was because she was talking to her best friend, Donnie. She never got used to a cell phone or used an answering machine. She loved a good bargain and loved going to Walmart and CVS with her coupons.
Veronica, or Gran as she later became known as, was very opinionated about most everything. It was her way or the highway, and you knew it. She loved her family so much and would have given her last dollar to her grandsons for gas money. Her middle name was "worry" and she worried about her family and their well being every day. She always prayed for her family and said the rosary all the time.
She always read romance novels and loved to watch Larry King and Nancy Grace. She and Gilbert would watch Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune every night. As Gilbert's health failed, she took care of him in spite of her own health declining. She would still make cookies even though her legs and feet ached.
Those grandsons were the pride and joy of her life. When they walked in the room and she would laugh and smile; but she would also fuss at them if she thought they needed it. They were indeed spoiled grandchildren.
Special thanks to Donnie for being her best friend, and Evelyn who helped her and Gilbert so much the last few months. Special thanks to Scott and White Hospital in Taylor and their staff; Special thanks to Dr. Nathan Cohen, whom Mom thought of so highly and cared for her so well. Special thanks to the SPJST nursing home in Taylor where she spent the last two weeks and her special angel Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary's Catholic School in Taylor, or the charity of one's choice.
