

Agatha May Varner Shank Hawes, 98, of Quincy formerly of Tekonsha passed away May 9, 2013 at her home at Archer Lake in Quincy. Her daughter Judy and husband were with her at her passing. She was born June 4, 1914 to Jacob and Metta (Yarnell) Varner in Butler, IN. Agatha married Loren L. Shank on Nov. 4, 1932. They farmed in Butler, IN before buying the farm in Tekonsha in 1938. In 1953 they opened the Dairy Queen in Tekonsha. Loren died in 1960. She later sold the Dairy Queen and house in Tekonsha and moved to the house Loren had built on Archer Lake in Quincy. She married Lyle Hawes in 1971 and he died in 1996. She was also preceded in death by her son Jacob in 1997, her brother Harold Varner and sister Fanny Boger and step son Bill Hawes.
She is survived by her two daughters, Sharon (Ernest) Shilling of Lehigh Acres, FL and Judy (Gary) Reimer of Bellaire, MI and daughter- in- law Betty Lou Shank of Tekonsha. Also, 8 grand children, 12 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, plus 1 step daughter Dorothy (Dick) Moore and step daughter- in- law Jan Hawes. There are step grand, great and great great grandchildren on the Hawes and Shank side.
She loved to fish, garden, crochet and read. She enjoyed over 50 years wintering in Florida and up to the last wanted to put in a garden. Farming and family were important to her as well as her best friend and 13 year companion, a Shipoo named Pennitoo Pistol.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday May 15, 2013 at 1:00 pm with 2 hours of visitation prior to the service starting at 11:00 am from Putnam’s of Tekonsha. Pastor Barbara Pryor will officiate and burial will take place in Riverside Cemetery in Tekonsha. Memorial contributions may be given to the CHC Hospice of Branch County or the Tekonsha Animal Hospital.
