

Charles earned his Bachelors Degree from Mansfield State College and his Masters Degree in Applied Mathematics from Johns Hopkins University. He had a long-time career as a Mathematician at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Howard County, Md. As a scientist, he was the co-inventor of the continuous rod missile warhead that was used in the US Navy's Talos missile. Later in his career, he participated in research connected to the Strategic Defense Initiative and was instrumental in the Delta 180 and Delta 181 rocket launches. Interests outside of work included playing violin in a community orchestra, building string instruments, and other woodworking projects. He was a Lifetime member of the American Defense Preparedness Association.
Charles was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol Lonsdale Brown, second wife, Gloria Raynor and his infant grandson, David J. Brown.
Survivors include his sons, Rod Brown (Gail) and David Brown (Cindy); sister, Rhea Wattles; grandchildren, Allison Brown (Shane Copland), Sara Brown, Gary M. Brown LCDR USN, Andrew Charles Brown (Danielle), Sam Brown (Kristie) and Nathan Brown; and great-grandchildren, Brenden Lipscomb, Maxwell Copland, Penny Copland, Josselyn Brown and Wesley Brown.
