Heahwan was born on August 9, 1950 (lunar calendar) in Seoul, Korea. As a youth, he enjoyed camping and mountain climbing. He immigrated to the United States in 1972, and a few years later he joined the United States Army. His career in the military gave him (and his family) the opportunity to travel the world. After 20 years of service, including during the Gulf War, he retired with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer Four.
Heahwan then went on to attend McCormick Theological Seminary, where he obtained both his Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees. He found great joy and meaning in preaching the Word of God as an Ordained Minister. His detail oriented nature and his love of teaching also led him to positions within the governing body of the Presbyterian Church (USA) as Executive Presbyter/Stated Clerk and Synod Executive. Heahwan desired to be a peacemaker and educator, and he was thankful for the opportunity to meet many friends through his work for the Church.
He is survived by his wife, Yunkwang Rim; daughter, Nancy (Matthew) Likes; daughter, Cindy (Paul) Stancik; sister, Teresa Kubick; brother, Taehwan Rim; and grandchildren Xoe Likes, Yuni Likes, Kaylen Stancik, and Chase Stancik.
Private family services will be held in Tampa, followed by interment at Florida National Cemetery (Bushnell). Per his request, the family gratefully declines flowers and donations, but prayers, condolences and fond memories are gladly accepted at www.blountcurryterraceoaks.com.
