Philip J. Nodhturft Jr.

As the oldest of five siblings, Philip carried an early understanding of care and constancy—an example that remained evident throughout his life and in the bonds he maintained with family near and far.

Phil was born in the Bronx, NY and moved upstate to Walden, NY in his high school years, where he graduated from Valley Central High School. After high school, Phil enrolled in the Air Force, where he proudly served his country for four years during the Vietnam era. Phil then returned to college at SUNY – New Paltz, where he earned two Baccalaureate degrees in History and Education. He also earned two Masters degrees in Education and Education Administration. Over his distinguished teaching career, he taught not only all grade levels from Kindergarten to Junior College, but he also taught Special Education students. He received the prestigious Teacher of the Year award from the Pasco County, Florida School District.

Phil was proud to serve his country. In addition to his active-duty service in the Air Force, Phil served as a member of the Army Reserves for 27 years, including during the Desert Storm era. He retired from the military after 31 combined years of service.

In his local community of Temple Terrace, FL, he was a youth sports coach for many years for his son Philip’s basketball, baseball, and soccer teams. He was also a certified soccer referee, and he and Philip spent many weekends refereeing soccer games together. Phil also served as the Manager of the multi-year Florida state championship soccer club, the Blackwatch Royals. As Manager, Phil helped plan the club’s international competition trips to Canada, England, and Ireland.

Phil also enjoyed woodworking and was a master carpenter. The beautiful tables, desks, bookcases, and jewelry boxes that he built still adorn the homes and offices of his family members.

Phil married his high school sweetheart, Virginia (“Ginny”) Nodhturft, and they were married for over 56 years. Phil blessed the lives of his wife and son with endless love and devotion and unwavering support. He passed peacefully at home, holding their hands and enveloped in their love. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished and loved.

Philip is survived by his wife of 56 years, Virginia "Ginny" Nodhturft; his son, Philip Nodhturft, III (Melissa); his brother, Richard Nodhturft; his sister, Nanette Nodhturft; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Donald Nodhturft and Gary Nodhturft.
