Robert Allen "Bob" Byrd, lovingly known to family and friends as Bob, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2026, in Tampa, Florida, at the age of 75. He was born on May 10, 1951, in Tampa, Florida, and remained deeply connected to the community he proudly called home throughout his life.
Bob will be remembered as a kind, humble, and selfless man whose greatest joy came from helping others. He had an unwavering willingness to lend a hand, a friendly smile for everyone he met, and a positive attitude that brightened the lives of those around him. Even during times of personal hardship, Bob's concern remained focused on the well-being of others. His generosity, modest nature, and compassionate heart left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
One of Bob's favorite childhood memories was spending Saturday mornings with his brothers. Armed with their weekly allowance of twenty-five cents each, they would walk to the neighborhood store, where they could buy a soda, a candy bar, and spend the rest on penny candy. The afternoon was then devoted to watching Creature Features together, creating memories that all three of them would cherish throughout their lives.
Bob found happiness in life's simple pleasures. He had a fondness for Thai food, enjoyed watching science fiction television, and had a remarkable ability to make friends wherever he went. Above all else, his family was the center of his world. He deeply loved his children, grandchildren and great grand children, treasured every opportunity to spend time with them, and eagerly anticipated each family visit.
Following in the footsteps of his brothers, Bob proudly answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Armed Forces. During his military career, he served as a Communications System Supervisor for the United States Army, dedicating himself to the defense of the nation with honor and integrity. After his military service, Bob continued his commitment to serving others through his work with the Department of Veterans Affairs at the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital, where he cared for and supported fellow veterans with the same compassion that defined every aspect of his life.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, James Walter Byrd Sr. and Colleen (Compton) Byrd, and by his brother, James Byrd and his sister Diane Plummer.
He is lovingly survived by his children, Jake Worden and his wife, Nataya; Virginia Byrd and her fiance, Walter Neer; Christy Elliston and her husband, Brian Elliston; and Christopher Byrd. He is also survived by his brother, Michael Byrd; his sister, Gayle Walp; seven beloved grandchildren; three cherished great-grandchildren; five nieces; four nephews; and numerous extended family members and dear friends who will forever treasure his memory.
Bob's legacy is one of kindness, service, humility, and unconditional love. His gentle spirit, generous heart, and unwavering dedication to helping others will continue to inspire all who knew him. Though he will be deeply missed, the countless lives he touched stand as a lasting testament to a life well lived.
A service commemorating Bob’s life and service to his country will take place at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 31, 2026 at Florida National Cemetery. Florida National Cemetery is located at 6502 SW 102nd Avenue, Bushnell, FL 33513.
