In 1969, Rosalia and her husband, Angelo, brought their three young children — Salvatore, age five; Franc, age three; and Angela, just four months old — from Sicily to America, settling in Ybor City in Tampa, the very neighborhood where Rosalia's beloved mother had been born. A trailblazer and a risk-taker, she built and ran her own deli (“Little Sicily”) in Ybor City and was famously the woman who never called in sick.
Rosalia lived out her life with a quiet, unshakable moral authority. She rarely instructed and never demanded; she simply lived in such a way that those around her wanted to be better for having known her. To her three children she gave the most enduring gift of all — she prepared the ground for them to grow, and held an invisible net beneath them so they could reach without fear of falling too far. The success and the abundant love that surround Salvatore, Franc, and Angela today are the truest measure of the mother she was, and of the bright light she remained for everyone who came near her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Angelo Urso; and her brothers, Stefano Chillura, Nicola Chillura, and Giuseppe Chillura.
Rosalia is survived by her sons, Salvatore Urso (Andreé) and Franc Urso (Pamela); her daughter, Angela Hurley (Patrick); and her sister, Caterina Ippolito. She is also survived by her grandchildren Brooke and Reece Hoffman, Alec and Ethan Urso, and Patrick and Ryland Hurley.
