Derek Christian Oden

Derek Christian Oden of Temple, Texas, was welcomed into the arms of his Savior on June 26, 2026. He was born on April 2, 1972, to Ron and Jan Oden. Derek was a proud Marine, following in his dad’s footsteps. From the time he could walk, he knew how to salute and sing the Marine Corps Hymn. He spent six years as an infantry officer, leaving with the rank of Captain. Those who knew Derek had a friend for life. It wasn’t uncommon for him to go help a Marine buddy move, celebrate, mourn, or simply spend time. Once a Marine, always a Marine. He was a t-ball player, sister aggravator, kung fu fighter, life of every party, and eventually football player for Midway High School where he graduated in 1990. He obtained business degrees from both Texas Tech (BS) and Baylor Universities (MBA). After spending several years in the banking and finance industry, he decided to follow his heart and go into education, where we all know the real money is.Only a few years into teaching and coaching, the awards started to file in. He was humble about each and eager to recognize others’ achievements. He was quick to give credit to the Lord as He has blessed us with all our gifts. Derek met the most incredible person on earth in 2010, and her name is Amber. The best bonus in his life is that Colton and Trent came with her. Every opportunity he got to speak of the boys, you would see him beam with pride. Derek would have said Amber made him a better man every day. And he was right. Their relationship pointed to God more and more every day. Derek is survived by his wife Amber, bonus sons Colton Rankin and Trent Locklear; parents Ron and Jan Oden; sister Amy Dickey (Brad); niece Emily Dickey; a slew of loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at Vista Community Church (7051 Stonehollow) in Temple, Texas, on Wednesday, July 1, at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, there will be a scholarship created in Derek’s name. The details will be shared in the near future.
