Flossie Mae Lewis

Flossie Mae (Sims) Lewis passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2022 at the TLC Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Temple, TX. The daughter of the late Joe and Nannie (Powell) Sims, she was born in Smackover, Arkansas on March 1, 1935 making her 87 year old.

In 1954, Flossie graduated from Smackover Trading School in Arkansas. She continued her education at Southwestern Christian College in Terrel, Texas where she received an associate degree. She received her License Vocational Nurse (LVN) from St. Joseph Nursing School in Houston, Texas where she was one of three blacks in the program - Following her education, Flossie lived and worked in Houston as a LVN.

She was united in marriage to Maynard Denver Lewis on December 19, 1959 in Victoria, Texas and they lived in Houston, raising their two sons and grandkids.

Throughout her life, Flossie who was rich in good works, inspired to help others in our family as well as the community by volunteering at the local schools, and fighting for the civic rights of the local civic clubs. Most of all, she loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and His church, ministering to several families. Also, she had a green thumb growing all kind of flowers and all kinds of vegetables, sharing the extra harvest with family, neighbors and/or those in need. In addition, Flossie learned how to sew and knit, making blankets and clothing for family and friends. Finally, Flossie leaves us her legacy of love in action and good works like Tabitha in the scriptures, ‘…She was full of good works and acts of charity…All the widows stood beside Peter weeping and showing tunics and other garments that Dorcus made while she was with them’ (Acts 9:36-39).

Those surviving include her sister, Martha Sue Harris (Arlington, Tx); her two brothers, Joe Sims, Jr. (Smackover) and Leon Sims (Houston); two sons, Ivory Lewis (Houston) and Charlie Lewis (Temple, Tx); and several nephews, nieces, grandkids, and great-grandkids.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her two brothers Jake Sims and James Sims, and her three sisters Roena Sims, Roberta Sims- Fuller and Nellie Sims.

Celebration of Life will be held:

11am on Saturday, January 7th at Cloverland Church of Christ, 11903 Scott Street, Houston, Texas 77047.
