Grady E “Butch"Hammett, a devoted family man, friend and honored United States Army Veteran, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2026, at the age of 86.
Grady was born in Lampasas , TX to O’Dean Hammett and Benita Cements Hammett. Grady’s early education began in Burnet, TX and in later years was completed in Corpus Christi, along with his two siblings, O’Dean, Jr and Millo. He graduated from Ray High School and then from A&I University (A&M University, Kingsville), where he was active in ROTC.
After graduating from college his initial career was as a Commissioned Officer in the United States Army, retiring as a Major. He spent 20 years as a Signal Officer, faithfully serving our country in the 3rd Special Forces to include two tours in Vietnam. He is well known in his second career in the Oil and Gas Industry for his negotiating abilities where he gained numerous great friends.
Grady lived a life rooted in love, service and unwavering dedication to his family. He proudly served our country, carrying with him the values of duty, honor and integrity long after his time in uniform. His service was a source of pride - not only to him, but also to all those who knew him.
He married his great love, Beverly Gill Hammett in March 1994 and his years blossomed to include world travel and fun wherever they were together. They both love animals and were always blessed with at least one fur baby at all times.
His presence brought comfort, wisdom and warmth to those he loved. Grady will be remembered most for his amazing laugh! It could fill the room in seconds and lift even the heaviest hearts. It reflected his spirit ~ strong, joyful, genuine and was extremely contagious. It is a sound his family will forever carry in their memories.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly, and children, Stephanie Hammett, Susan Hammett Wittner (Melissa), Grady Hammett, Jr (Karrol), Christy Bryant (Terry) and Sam Gill (Kenna). He leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and his dearest sister Millo Owens, brother-in-law Wayne “Rusty” Goodwin and special cousin Jimmy Lynn Clements.
A military service honoring Grady’s life will be held on March 3, 2026 beginning with a viewing at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home, 3220 South 31st Street, Temple, TX from 10:00 AM -12:00 PM, followed by a 1:00 PM service at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 11463 TX-195, Killeen, TX 76542.
