Memorial services for John Floyd Akin Jr., 82, of Temple, will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 29, 2010 at Odem Evergreen Cemetery in Odem, TX. He died Monday, October 25, 2010 in a Temple nursing home. Cremation services have been entrusted to Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home of Temple.
John was born May 21, 1928 in West Palm Beach, FL to John Floyd Akin Sr. and Mildred Lohman Akin. John served in the United States Marine Corp. He married Mary Cleaveland Pennington October 17, 1953 in Lyford, TX. They lived in Cushing, TX and in Odem from 1963 to 1974. Mr. Akin was employed as a Linesman with Missouri Pacific Railroad from 1954 to 1974 and as a Chemical Operator with Celanese Chemical Corporation from 1974 to 1994. He had lived in Temple for the past ten years where he was a member of the Sportsman Club.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary Akin of Temple; one son, Steven Akin of New Braunfels, and two grandchildren; Cassidy Rae Otahal of Corpus Christi and Kristy Simpson of Austin.
