Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Lorraine was the third daughter of August S. and Lydia (Rebello) Dias. She graduated from East Providence High School in 1956 and then, in 1960, married her high school sweetheart, Edgar (Ed) Wilson Care. Their early years in New England were filled with raising two daughters with love and laughter in Derry, New Hampshire, as well as Andover and North Reading, Massachusetts.
Lorraine was a knowledgeable insurance agent for the majority of her career; she was also a gifted chef, having worked in fine dining, displaying her culinary talents live on a Boston news channel. Her kitchen was always open, and she enjoyed hosting family and friends just like her Portuguese mother and sisters. Her sausage rolls and Boston cream pies were the best!
In 1996, the couple followed their hearts to Salado, Texas, to be closer to Deborah and her family. By 2012, they embraced the island life of Port Aransas. Lorraine’s presence was always a busy one as she worked with Janet and Ed at Coastal Ed’s, Mary (and Dale) at Ragdoll Boutique, and Tim at Lone Star Taste. She volunteered at her church and in the community. She found her “forever church” at Trinity by the Sea, with Father James, and cultivated friendships that became like family.
If you knew Lorraine, you knew she was never idle - skiing one day, dusting off golf clubs the next, enjoying a glass of wine while listening to music, and still working up until May. Her shopping adventures were fun as she looked for bargains, she cooked homemade meals, and somehow still managed to keep everything spotless. Her extroverted energy and candid perspectives kept life interesting.
She leaves behind her daughter Deborah Sather and husband Steven of Salado; daughter Pamela Care of Robbins; five adoring grandchildren - Max, Jeffrey, Tristan, Ellie, and Townes; her sister Christine Duquette of East Providence, Rhode Island; her brother Thomas Rainey of Providence, Rhode Island; and an extended family of nephews, nieces, and cousins. Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Ed, and her sisters Jane and June, who were twins.
We would like to express our sincere appreciation to her island friends, including Carrie and Peggy, for their support these past few months, and the doctors, nurses, and staff at Temple Memorial for their care and kindness. A special thank you and appreciation for the Hospital at Home nurses Peaches, Kelly, Lynnsie, Barbara, and Jennifer.
A memorial service to celebrate Lorraine will be held in Port Aransas, Texas, at Trinity By The Sea Episcopal Church on Saturday September 13, at 11:00 AM. A private burial will follow at Salado Cemetery in Salado, Texas.
