Vernon Thomas (Tommy) Powell Oct. 20, 1961- Jan 2, 2013

A very special young man went to join our Lord Jesus Christ and to be reunited into the waiting arms of his beloved parents. Tommy Powell was born October 20, 1961 to Mr. Vernon T. Powell and Mrs. Margie Lou Marshall Powell. Tommy was preceded in death by his father and mother, and is survived by his older brother, Mr. Marshall (Skip) Powell and Mrs. Pat Wilkinson-Powell of San Jose, CA, both formerly from Temple. His nieces, Jordan Powell of San Jose, CA, Mrs. Chelsea Roeder-Stern and Mrs. Whitney Roeder-Platina, both formerly from Temple. His sister, Mrs. Patti Powell-Gidden and her husband Mr. Barry Gidden of Temple. His nephews, Mr. Landon Kleypas, wife Mrs. Kaci Kleypas and their daughter Graci Jo Kleypas, and Mr. Cason Kleypas, all Temple area residents.

Anyone who crossed Tommy’s path would know that Down’s Syndrome children are put on this earth to teach us life lessons. Before his health began to fail, Tommy was very involved with the Special Olympics Program, ARC Fun Night, Camp Funshine, Ocker Brethren Church, and he enjoyed being with his family and friends. No beautiful blue eyes would light up more with just the mention of a hamburger and french fries!

Family Visitation will be on Monday, January 7th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Temple. The Memorial Service will be on Tuesday, January 8th at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home of Temple.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Association of Retarded Citizens (ARC) at P.O. Box 811 Temple, TX 76503.

Heaven’s Very Special Child A meeting was held quite far from Earth! It's time again for another birth. Said the Angels to the LORD above, This Special Child will need much love. His progress may be very slow, Accomplishments he may not show. And he'll require extra care From the folks he meets down there. He may not run or laugh or play, His thoughts may seem quite far away, In many ways he won't adapt, And he'll be known as handicapped. So let's be careful where he's sent, We want his life to be content. Please LORD, find the parents who Will do a special job for you. They will not realize right away The leading role they're asked to play, But with this child sent from above Comes stronger faith and richer love. And soon they'll know the privilege given In caring for their gift from Heaven. Their precious charge, so meek and mild, Is HEAVEN'S VERY SPECIAL CHILD.

Loosing Tommy was like loosing not only a sibling but also like loosing a child. He was so special, but learning how much he influenced and how much he meant to so many friends we have heard from shows what a wonderful job my parents did in raising him and keeping him active in their lives. Love to you all

What I would have said yesterday, if I could have figured out a good way to say it…

To Tommy,
When I was way small, my folks told me I was ‘special' because I was adopted, ‘picked-out.' Then I met my cousin Blake. He had challenges I didn't understand. He didn't act like me, talk like me, or look like me. My folks told me, “he was ‘special.'” Then I remember, when I was 5 or 6 years old, meeting you, with your mom at my Papaw's (Mr. Marks') store. After y'all left, my dad told me that you were ‘special' too, kinda like Blake. I didn't put it all together for a time, but, I figured it out I guess. The best I've been able to tell, from then that is, y'all were the ‘chosen' ones, put here by God to teach us all the power of Love.

Thanks for helping me. Tell my dad hey!
