

2012. He grew up in Roodhouse, Illinois and graduated from medical school at Washington University
in St. Louis. His medical career consisted of nine years in the U.S. Army followed by years
of research and teaching at Johns Hopkins Medical University, Mahidol University in Bangkok,
Thailand and Indiana University Medical School in Indianapolis. He was Dean of the medical
school at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. He was President of the China Medical Board
of New York, a foundation which supported research and education in medicine, nursing and public
health in East and Southeast Asia until his retirement in 1997. He was only the second American to
be awarded the China Health Medal for his work in China. This was presented in a ceremony
in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jane Ann, and two children,
Dr. Dale Sawyer of Houston and Dr. Carole Bolin of Haslett, Michigan, and six wonderful grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Texas Home Health and Hospice in Waco or Wright State University
Medical School in Dayton, Ohio to the William D. Sawyer scholarship. Cremation services under the
direction of Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home.
