Betty Jane Melvin

Betty Jane Melvin, 94, of Terre Haute, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2017, at Harrison’s Crossing. She was born on March 12, 1922 in Terre Haute. She married Billie R. Melvin on November 20, 1942. Betty is survived by her daughter, Julie West and husband Dale West III of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Jordan West and wife Jessyka, and Alysia Bales and husband Byron, all of Terre Haute; and one great-grandchild on the way. At the age of three, Betty’s father passed away. She was raised by her mother, Ethel Combes, and her step-father, Stubby Combes. They also preceded her in death along with Betty’s husband, Billie and their daughter, Janice Voll of Columbus, IN. Betty was a member of Higher Ground Church. She was active in Youth for Understanding and hosted many foreign exchange students from all over the world. She loved being a mother to her exchange students and visited many of them in their home countries. She enjoyed traveling. Betty was a born nurturer and took many people under her wing, providing guidance, love, and comfort to those in need. Betty had an artistic nature and loved to oil paint, crochet, and sew. She was a strong woman with a strong faith. She will be deeply missed. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday, February 11 at Higher Ground. A funeral ceremony will take place at noon on Saturday, at the church. Betty will be laid to rest next to her husband, Billie in Roselawn Memorial Park.
