Obituary of Debra Irene Sutherland
Debra “Debbie” Irene Sutherland, age 68, of Terre Haute, Indiana passed away peacefully the morning of Friday, March 4, 2022. Born April 3, 1953 in Terre Haute, IN to Ralph “Jack” and Ruth (Brown) Roads, she was the oldest of five children. Debbie was a part of the first graduating class of Terre Haute South High School in 1972 before going on to attend Indiana State University. Debbie shared two children, Morgan and Evan, with husband Stephen “Steve” Sutherland whom she married in 1983. Debbie was extremely proud of her children and would always take the opportunity to chat up friends on their recent accomplishments. She enjoyed mushroom hunting in the spring, summertime at the lake with family, the Covered Bridge Festival in the fall, but was not a fan of dealing with ‘the hill’ during the winter months. In 2018, Debbie aka “Sutherland” officially retired from the Indiana Department of Child Services after nearly two decades of dedicated service, touching many lives. She was fondly known as the office ‘work mom’ who was ‘feisty with a side of sass.’ It goes without saying, she truly cherished her DCS family. Debbie was a Lung Cancer survivor who had been in remission for more than five years! Even though her health had deteriorated over the last year, this loss was unexpected leaving family and friends shocked and deeply saddened. She is survived by her two children, Morgan Woolley (Matt) of Chicago, IL and Evan Sutherland (Stephanie) of Brazil, IN; her husband, Stephen Sutherland; and her grand dogs, Zeus and Winnie. She is also survived by siblings: Mike Roads (Barb), Cindy Krieger (Bill), Bruce Roads, and Lori Drisko; as well as, many in-laws, several nieces and nephews, too many to list, but not forgotten. Debbie is preceded in death by parents Jack and Ruthie, sister-in-law Debbie Roads (Bruce); brothers-in-law John Drisko (Lori) and Jeff Sutherland (Carmenacita, “ Mimi”); and mother and father-in-law Dolores (Eck ) and Jack Sutherland. Per her wishes, cremation has been chosen. Visitation will be held at from 11AM – 1PM at Roselawn Funeral Home on Friday, March 11, 2022 followed by a memorial service beginning at 1PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to local organization S.H.I.N.E. Foster Family Resources INC. or The American Lung Association.
