Edgar B. Powell, 86, of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories, a family who loved him dearly, and a legacy of faith, service, and unconditional love.
Born on July 20, 1940, in Linton, Indiana, Ed was the son of Lester and Ona (Canada) Powell. He graduated from Garfield High School and went on to build a life defined by hard work, dedication, and an unwavering desire to help others. He retired from GTE/Verizon after more than 20 years of service, but retirement did not mean slowing down. Ed returned to school at Ivy Tech, where he completed HVAC training and earned his certification. He later continued contracting with Verizon.
On September 30, 1960, Ed married the love of his life, Linda Bouillez, at Burnett Methodist Church.
Last month, they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary, marking more than six decades of shared love, devotion, and memories.
Ed was an outgoing, positive, and generous man who had a wonderful way of making people feel welcome. He loved to joke around, share a smile, and bring a little laughter into the lives of those around him. He was patient and tolerant, always willing to listen, offer advice, and lend his support. He had a special gift for putting others before himself, often thinking of what someone else needed long before considering his own needs.
Ed’s work ethic was matched only by his compassion. He understood that a repair could mean comfort for a family, and a little of his time could make a meaningful difference in someone's life. He never needed recognition for what he did. The satisfaction of helping another person was reward enough.
At the center of Ed’s life was his relationship with Jesus Christ. A longtime member of North Terre Haute Baptist Church, he served faithfully in many ways, including participating in prison ministry and teaching adult Bible classes. He shared his knowledge, talents, and faith with others, seeking opportunities to encourage people and help them grow in their own walk with God.
When he was not helping someone with a project, teaching, or spending time with family, Ed enjoyed gardening, relaxing on the porch with a bowl of ice cream, and watching the news and sports on television. He truly enjoyed solving construction and mechanical problems, with vast analytical abilities. Family and friends could always depend on Ed to fix any problem. When calling him by phone and asking what he was doing, he always responded, working. When leaving after visiting he always said, drive slow. Two great pieces of life advice.
As Ed’s family reflects on his remarkable life, one sentiment speaks from the heart: I have always admired and looked up to you. You have given us so many good memories that we will always treasure. We only wish our time together did not have to end.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Ona (Canada) Powell; and his brothers, Earl Dean Powell and Philip Powell.
Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife of 66 years, Linda Bouillez Powell; his sons, Michael Powell and Mark Powell; his daughter, Marla Powell Frazier; his granddaughters, Adele Powell McCoy (Nick) and Sara Hoffman Tiamson (Jordan); his grandsons, Bradley Hoffman (Bethany) and Aaron Powell (Hayden), and six great-grandchildren; his sister, Nancy Powell Creasey (Gary); and many other family members and friends whose lives were enriched by his love and kindness.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton Street, Terre Haute, Indiana 47805. A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation. Burial will take place at Roselawn Memorial Park.
