Floyd John Swenson, M.D. passed away on Monday, November 7, 2016. He was born June 18, 1932 in Duluth, Minnesota to Carl R.H. Swenson and Lily E. (McArthur) Swenson. He grew up the youngest of three children on a farm in northern Minnesota where he survived polio at about age 12. He graduated from Proctor High School in 1950, then completed undergraduate studies at the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 1954 and went on to graduate with honors from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1958 where he received a research award. He practiced medicine as a family physician for more than 50 years in several states including Minnesota, California, Arizona, Utah, Indiana and Nevada. Among his fondest memories were providing health care for Native Americans, and taking care of veterans when he worked for the Veterans Administration. Practicing medicine was truly his calling. He maintained memberships in Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Association, Society of Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, American Academy of Family Medicine, and the American Medical Association. He always especially loved spending time in northern Minnesota and the North Shore of Lake Superior.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his second wife Delores (Braun) Swenson, sister Lillian E. (Swenson) Knapp, niece Sherry Knapp, and stepson Kim Kirkman.
He is survived by his three children, Carolyn Swenson of Denver, Patricia Swenson Harms (Greg Harms) of Lyons, Colorado, Christopher Swenson (Kristy Heim) of San Francisco; stepdaughter, Lisa Romano of Arroyo Grande, CA; grandchildren Aaron (Victoria) Harms, Graham Harms, Audrey Swenson Heim, and Peter Swenson Heim; step-grandchildren Ashli Montano and Stephen Charles (Sarah) Kellick; step-greatgrandchildren Nathan Bostick, Tyson Jeffery Goggin and Avery Renee Montano; his former wife Ruth (Ross) Swenson and brother Carl Swenson, Jr.; nephews Bryan (Jackie) Knapp and David Knapp; and several other extended family members.
His family is proud of his dedication and hard work, and we trust that he will now have a permanent view of Lake Superior from his eternal home.
A graveside service will be held in Floyd’s honor on Monday, November 14, 2016 at Roselawn Memorial Park, located at 7500 N. Clinton Street in Terre Haute, Indiana at 3:00pm.
