Helen Berneice Stone Runyan Shields Schantz, 94, died Saturday, May 13th at Meadows Manor North Nursing Home in Terre Haute. She was born November 17th, 1922 in Bloomfield, Indiana to Rex and Helen Stone of Linton.
She is survived by her sons; David F. Runyan (Pamela) of Terre Haute, Mark A. Runyan (Cynthia) of West Virginia, and James D. Runyan (Rose) of Terre Haute; Grandchildren: Brooke Runyan of Terre Haute, Travis Runyan (Kristina) of Terre Haute, Ashley Wegner (Ben) of Brazil, Indiana, Zac Runyan (Shannon) of Columbia, SC, Danielle Runyan (Avery) of Fairbanks, Indiana, Timothy Runyan (Mikai) and Drew Runyan of West Virginia; Great-grandchildren: Kendall Mix, Jadelyn, Griffin, and Amira Runyan, Paul, Owen, Ellie and Sadie Wegner, Serene and Zeta Runyan, Colton McReynolds, Easton and Maverick Runyan; and a Great-greatgrandchild Kohen Lofland.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and father of her sons Benton F. Runyan, husband Parker Shields, and husband Bernard Schantz; and Sisters Maxine Houser of Elletsville and Mary Nell Harrison of Linton.
Berneice graduated from Linton-Stockton high-school where she also later worked as a secretary. She graduated from Indianapolis General Hospital School of Nursing as an RN. She earned a BA degree from St. Mary-of-the-woods WED program. She was a member of the Delta Theta Tau Sorority, Linton Business and Professional Women’s Club and Triads. She was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church of North Terre Haute. Many families remember her as Dr. Don Gerrish’s nurse for twelve years in North Terre Haute. She also worked at Union Hospital, and retired after seventeen years as a nursing instructor at Indiana Vocational Technical College. She enjoyed her retired life travelling the world, volunteering at Union Hospital, singing in the Purdue Extension Chorus, playing piano, and reading her bible which she completed five times. She could not go anywhere without being stopped by one of her numerous former nursing students.
Graveside services will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at 12:00PM with Rev. Rick Swan presiding. Mattox-Wood Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.
