

Terre Haute, IN - John E. Halladay died on June 28, 2026. He was 84.
John was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Dr. John E. Halladay and Sylvia Knoop on July 17, 1941.
He leaves behind his wife of fifty years Cathy McGuire and daughter Sylvia R. Halladay and son-in-law Russ Childers of Columbus, Ohio.
He attended Tulsa public schools and later graduated from Westinster College in Fulton, Missouri, with a degree in English.
After serving 5 years in the Air Force at bases in Minot, North Dakota, and Okinawa he went back to school at University of Illinois in Urbana for a Master's degree in journalism.
His first journalism job was at a small TV station in Champaign, Illinois. He later switched to print journalism at the Champaign News Gazette. He took a job as court reporter at the Terre Haute Tribune-Star in the early 80's where he worked for many years.
John was a constant reader and was devastated when his eyes failed him.
He loved reading science, particularly astronomy and science fiction as well as poetry and other literature.
He often interjected poetry and other literature he had committed to memory when the spirit moved him. His favorite poet was W.B.Yeats.
There will be no funeral but a memorial service will be held in August at the First Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Terre Haute.
Cremation arrangements are being made at the Mattox Wood Funeral Home.
John was a member of the Vigo County Public Library Friends of the Library and any memorials should be given to them.
