
Joseph Benjamin Lowery, Sr. transitioned from this earthly life on Tuesday, September 5, 2023. He was born on August 19, 1943, in Morganfield, Kentucky to Joseph Landon Lowery and Anna Bell (Liggin) Lowery.
Joseph served his country in the US Army and the Army Reserves at Grissom Air Force Base where he earned several Army Achievement Medals along with other military awards; while also working at Wiese Oldsmobile and Chrysler in Kokomo, IN. Joe was no stranger to hard work, as he had spent much of his time working on Uncle Jones and Aunt Gertrude’s farm as well as Uncle Sherman’s farm. After moving to Terre Haute, IN, he obtained employment at Putnamville Correctional facility while also serving in the Indiana National Guard where he reached retirement in 2004.
Joe also worked at Kelly Landscape, where he was responsible for multiple landscaping services including Indiana State University, Union Hospital, and various other areas in Terre Haute and the surrounding region. Joesph went solo and was known in the community for the love of his lawn care business. He covered many areas throughout Terre Haute. He was also employed at General Housewares and Accurate Glass.
On his off days, Joe enjoyed taking his sons to Sherman’s Meat Market to get fresh hotdogs. Joe enjoyed hunting and fishing and most of all, he loved being in the kitchen or on the grill. While in the kitchen, he and his wife would show such harmony cooking together.
Joe became an ordained deacon at Saint John Missionary Baptist Church in April of 2005 under the ministry of Pastor Ladd.
Joe‘s parents and his wife, Jessie Lee Lowery preceded him in death.
Joe leaves to cherish his memory; two sons, Joseph Lowery Jr. (Kelly) of Terre Haute, IN, Michael L. Lowery Sr. (Barbara) of Indianapolis, IN; a daughter, Chastity Story; his five Grandchildren, Jessica Turner (Andre), Delbert Lowery, Leah Lowery, Michael D. Lowery, Michael L. Lowery, Jr; his Great Grandchildren, Laresha Johnson, Lavontee’ Lowery, and Kahlil Lowery; and great-great grandfather to Melani Lowery. He also leaves to cherish his memory a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces/nephews, cousins,
and friends.
A Homegoing Celebration will be held at 12:30 on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Saint John's Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Dexter Jordan officiating. A viewing will take place from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
