Leo George Zambenini

Leo George Zambenini, 91, of Rosedale passed away on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Union Hospital. He was born on May 24, 1926, in Terre Haute to Egidio “John” Zambanini (later changed to Zambenini) and Anna Marietta Zambanini. He married Irma Callecod in 1948.

Leo is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Irma Zambenini of Rosedale; daughter, Linda Zambanini of Bloomington; niece, Annetta Callecod Greer; nephews, John Callecod, Wayne Callecod, and Keith Callecod; cousin, Robert Louis “Bob” Zambenini; and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Irene Van Lieu and Edith Callecod; nephew, David Callecod; and cousin, William “Bill” Zambenini.

Leo graduated from Otter Creek High School in 1943. He served in the Army Air Corps at the end of WWII, working as an B-52 mechanic in Germany. He graduated from Indiana State University with a Bachelor’s degree in both chemistry and physics and became a metallurgist and troubleshooter at Anaconda Aluminum in Terre Haute. His extensive knowledge made him an invaluable resource to the aluminum industry. Leo helped open a new Anaconda Rolling Mill in Russellville, Kentucky in the early 1980’s. He retired from ARCO Metals as an operations manager. After retirement, Leo was a highly sought-after consultant and troubleshooter for the aluminum industry in the United States, Europe, and Scandinavia.

Leo had a passion for traveling and especially loved to go to Italy where he found his roots in the Trentino Alps. Leo developed a love for creating art from stained glass. He enjoyed making various stained glass pieces to give to others. He liked to putter around in his shop both building and fixing things. He also enjoyed golfing. Leo was an active member of the Shriners, Masonic Lodge, and active in the Clinton Lions Club, even serving as president for two years. He also enjoyed helping with the Little Italy Festival in Clinton.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday, January 29 at Roselawn Funeral Home with a Clinton Lions Club Memorial Service taking place at 7 p.m. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 30 at the funeral home with Rev.
