

Madeline Counsell, 78, of Universal, Ind., died at 10:15 p.m. Monday, April 20, 2015. She was born in Universal March 11, 1937, to John and Christina Marietta Airola. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1955, and Indiana State Teachers College (ISU), class of 1959, with a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in education. For more than 35 years, Madeline was a teacher at Central, Fairview and Glendale Elementary Schools in Clinton, Ind. She was a member of the former St. Joseph Catholic Church and Altar Society in Universal, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Clinton, Vermillion County Hospital Guild, Clinton Public Library Board, Universal Young Men’s Club Auxiliary, Special Interest Car Club, Wabash Valley Classic Car Club, Wise Investors Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, Sigma Delta Pi, Vermillion County Retired Teachers Association, Indiana State Retired Teachers Association.
She wed Arthur Counsell June 28, 1958. He preceded her in death June 6, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Pete Airola and wife, Dee; sisters, Rosie Airola, and Mary Gallo and husband, Guido; and brother-in-law, Robert Counsell and wife, Mary Ann. Survivors include sister-in-law, Martha Rippy and husband, Rusty of Clinton; nieces and nephews, Dan, Ann and Tracy Rippy of Clinton, Mary Ann Lage, Barbara McHugh and husband, Steve, Judy Donohue and husband, Vince, Joe Counsell and wife, Carolina of Illinois, Bob Counsell and wife, Sue of Kansas, Joanna Gallo Marsteller and husband, Jack of California, Mary Teresa Gallo and husband, Tony Bridges of Chicago, John Gallo and wife, Teresa of Wisconsin, Mike Mauer, Lori Sommers and husband, Keith of Missouri, Joyce Peterson and husband, Rod, and Marilynn Sterner and husband, Joe of Kansas.
The prayer service at 10:45 a.m. Friday, at Giovanini Funeral Home, Clinton, will be followed by Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Clinton. Father Joseph Villa will officiate. Burial is at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at the funeral home, with a rosary recited at 7:30 p.m. Donations may be made to Clinton Public Library, Hospice of Wabash Valley, or the Parke Vermillion Humane Society.
