

Mary Raikes, 99, of Terre Haute, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 in Southwood Kindred Health Care Facility. Mary was born on May 25, 1912, in Saltcoats, Scotland to Archie Maxwell and Anne Murray Maxwell. At age 10, her family migrated to the United States and settled in the 12 Points area of Terre Haute where she resided until last October. Mary was a school crossing guard for 29 years. She was a 65 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 104 and Order of the Eastern Star 12 Points Chapter 528.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann McDowell and Lillian Eisman and her husband Curt; one brother, Alex Maxwell and his wife Dorothy of Terre Haute, five grandchildren, C.J. Eisman of Terre Haute, Leesa Bickle of Madrid, Spain; Kim McDowell of Mobile, AL; Kevin McDowell of Carmel, IN; Kip McDowell of Owensboro, KY; 9 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Victor; sister, Laura Goodrich; brother, Jim Maxwell; and wife Gloria; great-grandson, Sgt. Matthew McDowell; and great-great-grandson, Matthew Howell, and son-in-law Bill McDowell.
Visitation will be on Friday, March 30 from 11 – 1 at Thomas Funeral Home. The Order of the Eastern Star will perform a memorial service at 12:45 p.m. and a funeral ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with Reverend Max Brunton officiating.
