I was a new teacher at the old Deming Elementary in the early '70's. I remember most of the students and teachers. Nancy was assigned to my classroom as our teachers's aide. Those were interesting times with lots of social issues. The kids in our classroom were both wonderful and many were troubled as well. Several of the students were determined to make life miserable for the other students and for the teachers.
I believe Shane was in that first classroom (at least I'm pretty sure he was) Shane and several of the other students set the example for others about how to act with respect and with a love for learning.
Barry, you came to the school and showed me the support I wish more parents could have. It was obvious that you and Nancy spent time with your kids and were model parents. Like I said there were plenty of other troubled souls who didn't want to be there, and who didn't have the parental guidance that could have helped save them. Nancy spent time with those troubled kids and helped them learn how to have respect for others and for themselves. Her bright smile brought hope to all of the teachers who were struggling to restore this school to the quality learning center it was becoming when I left four years later. Nancy and your family are remembered as good friends who helped me, and reminded me that in the midst of chaos there can still be sanity.
Your loss is heartfelt. Bill Heyman
