Phyllis Ann Mayer-Fairley, passed into glory at home with her daughter Joanne (Fairley) Gallant in Terre Haute, Indiana, on May 7, 2026 at the age of 82. Phyllis was born April 8, 1944 in Cambridge, New York, to Harold and Dorothy (Telford) Mayer. She married James Reid Fairley on June 13, 1964, and Joanne was her only child.
Phyllis worked for many years in the accounting department of H. Greenberg & Son in Bennington, Vermont, and was still sharp with figures and schedules when she moved to Terre Haute in February 2024 to live with Joanne and her husband, Jeffrey.
Phyllis spent her last two years with her devoted daughter shopping, practicing shorthand, doing word puzzles, reading and studying the Bible, and visiting with and by her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was most comfortable at home, but did learn to appreciate the flat Indiana terrain, which provides beautiful skies and sunsets, and she would admit, if pressed, that she did not miss Vermont winters. She was adored by Joanne, Jeff, and her extended Indiana family.
Phyllis was predeceased by her husband James, and is survived by her daughter Joanne (Jeffrey) Gallant of Terre Haute; her granddaughter Courtney (Josh) Brittain of Loogootee, IN, grandson Jordan (Emily) Gallant of Elkhart, IN, and granddaughter Jayla (Stephen) Gallant of Knoxville, TN, and four great grandchildren; Addison, Samuel, and Ella Brittain, and Lincoln Gallant, her sisters; Claudette Mayer, of Caroga, NY, and Jane (Mayer) Brownell of Hoosick Falls, NY and many nieces and nephews.
The family will hold a celebration of her life at Calvary Temple Church, 2100 North 6 1/2 Street, Terre Haute, Indiana 47804, on Saturday May 16, 2026, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
