Samuel Joseph Peters Jr.

Samuel “Boone” Joseph Peters, Jr., age 89 died on Friday, July 24th. Samuel was born to Samuel Peters, Sr. and Mary Smith Peters in Terre Haute on December 18, 1925. He was the youngest boy of 9 children.

In 1943, Samuel left school to join the Navy during WWII. He sailed on the USS LST 504 and took part in the Normandy Invasion. In 1945 he married the love of his life, Virginia Jones and soon after ended his term in the Navy in 1946.

Samuel was a life-long member of the American Legion Post 104. There he served as Post Commander twice. He worked as a maintenance mechanic for the Alcan aluminum mill and retired from there after 32 years of employment.

Left behind to cherish his memory is his wife of over 70 years, Virginia Peters of Terre Haute; children, Steven J. Peters and wife, Susan M. Peters of Terre Haute and Richard W. Peters and wife, Rhonda Peters of Mishawaka, IN; grandchildren, William Peters, Samantha Peters, Wilson N. Cox, Jennifer Walker, Angel Jackson, Aidra Peters, and Andrew Peters; great-grandchildren, Ann Marie, Madelyn, Nathaniel, Amelia, Trace, and Landon and many nieces and nephews.

Samuel was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Sr. and Mary; son, William H. Peters; daughter-in-law, Barbara Peters; and siblings, George, Alfred, Forest, Jack, Edward “Nick”, Margaret, Betty Ann, and Myrt.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 30th from 10:00 AM until the funeral service at 2:00 PM at Thomas Funeral Home. Burial at Highland Lawn Cemetery with the American Legion Post 104 honoring their beloved comrade. Friends may leave words of comfort at www.thomasfuneralhome.net
