Obituary of Shirley Jewel Hickman
Shirley J. Hickman, 92, of Terre Haute, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Meadows Manor North, with her family by her side. She was born on March 10, 1926, in Horton, Kansas to Leonard and Esther “Essie” (Bushey) Shear. Shirley graduated high school in 1944 at Hiawatha, Kansas and attended junior college in Highland, Kansas. Shirley received her Elementary teaching certificate from Kansas State College in Manhattan, Kansas and went on to teach in a one room country school house. Later in life, she worked as the office manager for G.C. Murphy Store and was a cashier for the Hamilton Center until her retirement. In her spare time, Shirley enjoyed reading, sewing, and crocheting. She loved nature and was a wild bird enthusiast. She also liked to take care of her flowers and tending to her small garden every year. Shirley was a member of North Terre Haute Christian Church and was the director and coordinator of the Primetime Senior Group. Shirley is survived by her son, Paul Joseph Piper of Terre Haute; a sister, Patty Bruning of Hiawatha, KS; two grandchildren, Paul R. Piper and his wife Lea of Marshall, IL, Jennifer Morris and her husband Jason of Brazil; and five great-grandchildren who were her pride and joy. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred Hickman; and a sister, Ruth Ann Shear. Shirley’s family would like to thank the compassionate staff at Meadows Manor North and Great Lakes Caring Hospice. Donations may be made to either organization in lieu of flowers. Visitation will be held from noon until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 21 at Mattox-Wood Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, at the funeral home with Pastor Larry Lilly officiating.
