J. L. Hammons, 87, peacefully passed away on November 17, 2015 at his home in Lone Oak, TX. He was born on November 15, 1928 to Marion Zachariah and Ruby Gladys (Mason) Hammons in Ridgway, TX. “Buster”, as his family and friends knew him, enjoyed spending time outdoors. He liked fishing, planting a garden; growing all kinds of vegetables. Buster and his wife Melba would share vegetables from his garden with family, neighbors and people from their Church. Buster was maticulous at keeping his yard mowed and maintained. He very much enjoyed riding his tractor. His neighbors would ask him to mow their yard and lots. He delighted in these requests as it gave him a "need" to be on his tractor. He had several Pecan trees on his property. In the Fall Buster would pick up Pecans, shell them, keep a few for himself and give the rest away to family, neighbors and friends. A lot of people always looked forward the bags of shelled Pecans from Buster. His dog Lucy, was his best friend. Lucy would go with him everywhere; in the truck, on the golf cart even in his boat when he went fishing. Buster always looked forward to his annual Fourth of July Fish Fry. This tradition was passed on to his children, then to his grandchildren. It was an all day celebration that would include close to 100 people each year. People would gather at his Melba's house to enjoy his all so famous fish fry, lake activities and then of course fireworks to finish out the day. Buster was a heating and air condition technician by trade. He also worked for the Texas Department of Public Safety for 10 years prior to retiring. Buster was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was a God fearing man who loved the Lord. Those who have preceded him are his wife Melba; parents Marion and Ruby; son Harold Hammons; siblings Jennabelle Williams, James Earl “Shorty” Hammons and Darva Hall. Those left to cherish his memory are his children Jeanie Curry and husband Lynn, Marilyn Carpenter and husband Terry, Steven Hammons and wife Paula and Krystal Washington and husband Dale; 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; sister Lizzy Williams, brothers Bill Hammons and Jackie Hammons who will miss him dearly.
