He was a U. S. Army veteran and retired from Red River Army Depot. He was a member of Hardy Memorial United Methodist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Butler, three brothers, Neal, John Henry, and Lynn Butler, and two sisters, Lucille Horsey and Floydale Fontenot.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Joy and Tom Wimsatt of Madison, Alabama and Tamara and Steve Hackett of Wake Village, Texas and one sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn Joy and Morris Vines of Dallas, Texas, and many other relatives and friends.
The family would like to thank all of the wonderful people who helped take care of Johnie over the years. They would like to acknowledge Dr. Shawn Stussy and staff at Family Medical Group, Christus Home Health staff and his long-time nurses, Brenda and Rae, the staff and friends at Colonial Lodge Assisted Living, the staff at Lippian Family Dentistry, and Dr. Stringfellow, staff and therapists at Edgewood Manor. The family would like to give a very special thanks to the entire staff and his friends at the Retreat at Kenwood Assisted Living where he received such excellent care with respect and dignity. They would also like to thank the staff of Hospice of Texarkana, who gave him special comfort care.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at Hardy Memorial United Methodist Church at 1:00 P.M. with Rev. Preston Greenwaldt and Jerry Black officiating. Visitation will follow the service in the church foyer. Arrangements are under the direction of East Funeral Home – Downtown.
