

Val was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. In World War II he was a pilot in the Army Air Corps where he achieved the rank of 2nd Lt. He graduated high school in Tyler, TX in 1941, and then attended the University of Texas at Austin, TX. After U.T. he attended St. Mary’s Seminary in San Antonio, TX. After Seminary he graduated from Notre Dame with a Masters Degree in Philosophy. After his college studies he spent many years teaching junior high, high school and college classes. Among other courses, he taught Latin for many years.
He is a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.
Val is preceded in death by his parents Dr. Val J. Sterle, Sr. and Helen Sterle; a brother Dr. Frank Sterle; and a niece, Mary Sterle.
He is survived by a brother Joseph Sterle, Sr. of Texarkana; two nephews, Joseph Sterle, Jr. of Texarkana and Frank Sterle of Houston, TX; two nieces, Ashley Sterle of Austin, TX and Diane Wilcox of Texarkana; and a sister-in-law, Betty Sterle of Texarkana.
The family wishes to extend their appreciation to Debbie Alkire for many years of dedication and special friendship with Val.
The rosary will be recited at 6 pm Wednesday at East Funeral Home-Moores Lane.
A mass of Christian burial will be 10 am Thursday at East Funeral Home-Moores Lane followed by a military honors committal service at Holy Cross Cemetery.
