Jesus said, “In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” John 14:2-3
Anna Jewel, known to all of her friends and family as Judy, was born in Perry, Georgia on July 24, 1920 to Luther and Catherine Huffman Wicker. She was their only child. She had two half-sisters and a half- brother. Judy grew up in Georgia and Florida until she was seventeen. She then moved to Houston to live with her half-sister in the Heights. She earned a two year degree from Massey Business School.
After graduation she began working at Brown and Root where she met her future husband, Garrett Roberts. Judy and Garrett married on January 4, 1942. During their marriage of 65 years, they had four children; Joyce, Gary, Cathy and Dee Anna. She stayed at home and raised the children while Garrett worked all over the world with Brown and Root until his retirement.
Judy loved the Lord and the children. Judy and Garrett were members of Resurrection Lutheran Church and both were very involved in church activities. Known as Ms. Judy, she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She went to Bible Study Fellowship and kept the children so their mothers could attend BSF. It wasn’t uncommon for you to go somewhere with her and someone would come up to the her and say “Ms. Judy, you may not remember me, but you taught me Sunday School.” She would always say she remembered them and how much she enjoyed teaching them. She would ask how they were doing and what was going on in their life.
She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She would hunt for frogs and lizards, make porridge (oatmeal) for breakfast, play outside, talk about God’s creation, and pick vegetables from the garden. When it was time for them to leave, she would always tell them, “You made my day and come back soon.”
Judy enjoyed gardening, bowling and was an avid bridge player. She played bridge until she was 99 ½ and always said that bridge kept her mind sharp.
Judy was preceded in her death by her husband, Garrett, and her grandson, Darren Roberts.
She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Joyce (Doug) Stewart, Gary (Jeanette) Roberts, Cathy (Deuwain) Henrichs and Dee Anna (Rick) Wimberley, 8 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
Our family also wants to express our deepest gratitude to Lidia Cozma and all the staff at Grace Residential Care Home for providing wonderful care and compassion to Judy while under difficult circumstances.
There will be a private graveside service for Judy on Friday, the 14th of May 2021, with a celebration of her life later this summer at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Spring, Texas.
