Betty was an amazing woman, full of energy, wit and creativity. Her college classmates have written, “When Betty is around anything can happen...everybody loves her.” She attended Central High in Savannah, the University of Tennessee, and Memphis State University. She was a teacher in Hardin County, TN. and will be well remembered as a Girl Scout leader.
Her unique talents served neighbors, friends and family and was exemplified as Christmas program organizer and teacher at Cherry’s Chapel Methodist Church. From curtains to costumes to catering and caring, Betty had a way of making any occasion special. Her china and silverware were an everyday affair and her motto, “Do it up Brown” meant make it memorable and beautiful and cherish life.
She adored her husband of sixty years, James E. Brown and enjoyed encouraging his success and planning parties for Woodman of the World. They moved with their two daughters to Texas in 1965, where her gardening skills flourished. The beauty and wonder of nature captivated Betty and her tablescapes were a marvel long before the term was coined.
Her humor was legendary and she had the ability to make everyone feel special. She could compose a riddle for a birthday surprise while cooking, arranging flowers and caring for grandchildren all while wearing high-heels and pearls. Her innate sense of style and boundless energy for life will be missed. She truly was as some have called her, “Mighty Mouse.”
Betty is preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, William H. Weatherford, M.D. and L.E. Weatherford and her treasured grandson, James Allen Swearingen. She is survived by her devoted and loving husband, James E. Brown and her daughters, Cherry Brown Damianoff and her husband Greg; Martha Brown Swearingen and her husband Jay; and by her granddaughters, Katherine Damianoff and Andrea Swearingen, of The Woodlands, Texas.
