Charles Wayne Kelso, Jr. led quite a varied and rewarding life. Born August 6, 1943, he was the eldest son of Chuck and Marina Kelso. With a Dad in the Air Force, Charles was lucky enough to travel and live across the globe.
From such diverse locales as Montgomery, Alabama to the island of Bermuda; from El Paso, Texas to Yokota Air Force Base, Japan his travels afforded him the opportunity to visit many historic and beautiful places fueling his lifelong interest in history and cultural diversity.
Ultimately he landed in Houston, Texas where he lived for most of his adult life with the exception of several forays into the realm of higher education at Texas A & M and Texas A & M and again at Texas A & M. Which, while not providing him with his degree, did make him an avid and lifelong Aggie.
However, after a break to enter the military where he served with the US Army in Korea, he returned to Houston and, following in the family business, he began his career as an educator. He worked as an attendance clerk at Sterling High School and entered a study program (a position that his mother 'volunteered' him for) that resulted in his resuming his college studies at TSU. After completing his degree at TSU, he then returned to Sterling as their new Math teacher. He continued his own education ultimately obtaining his Masters degree from the University of Houston Clear Lake. Thus commenced his long and rewarding journey in education that saw him become a pioneer and innovator in the fledgling area of computer usage in school settings. Particularly notable was his work with multi-handicapped students designing and implementing innovative ways for these students to utilize computers in the classroom. This resulted in his being recognized in a local news segment as a true hero among the Houston community for his work in this area.
Charles was a truly dedicated and inspirational academic leader who had an immeasurable impact on the lives of his family and friends and a multitude of young students who all had the pleasure of learning from Mr. Kelso. He will be missed.
