Clara Bell Rice Duckers was born on September 4th in 1935 in Memphis, Texas to William and Myrtle Rice. She was the sixth of eight children. When she was around five, they moved to Eldorado, Oklahoma and had a farm.
She was very tough and strong-willed. She had many responsibilities as a child such as picking cotton, milking cows, and feeding the chickens. At the age of eight, when her brother cut his finger off on the windmill, she brought the cows in by herself. In high school, she played basketball. She told a boy who wanted to kiss her to go kiss a fencepost. She was the first one in her family to go to college and attended Oklahoma A&M.
While visiting her sister Margaret in Illinois, she met Ronald Duckers who she married a few years later. She was a teacher and taught in Illinois for several years but gave Conroe ISD forty-four years. Clara and Ron had two children, Ronda and Derek. They also had two granddaughters, Megan and Kitty and two grandsons, Blake (who is now deceased) and Brock. She also loved her dogs, of which, she had many.
Clara loved Bible study, playing Bridge and Bunko, reading, knitting, and watching the Aggies and Cowboys (both OSU & Dallas) play football. She also enjoyed cruises and collecting ducks. She was a member of the Daughters of the Texas Republic, Colonial Dames, National Society of United States Daughters of 1812 and an officer in the Daughters of the American Revolution.
If anyone ever said she was from Oklahoma, she quickly corrected them that she was a Texan.
In later years, she suffered from A Fib and Dementia. She chose to move into an assisted living facility and was later moved into the memory care unit. Her health went downhill this last year, and she was hospitalized several times. Three days before Christmas she went into a coma in the ER. She went to see Jesus on December 28th.
She was the last of her siblings and lived to the age of eighty-eight, though she had claimed she would make it to ninety-two.
A memorial service for Clara will be held Friday, January 12, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at The Church At Alden Bridge, 8050 Branch Crossing Dr, Spring, TX 77382. A graveside service will occur Saturday, January 13, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Sanger Cemetery, 525 McReynolds Rd, Sanger, TX 76266.
