Dorothea F. Atkins, loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, was peacefully called to her Lord and Savior on February 10, 2016, at age 89. Dottie, as she was affectionately called, was born in Baltimore, MD, on February 27, 1926, to Frederick and Bertha Fehr (nee Steadtler). Dottie graduated from Olney High School in Philadelphia, PA, and soon met the love of her life, Kendall R. Atkins, Jr. They were married in 1950 and lived a fulfilling life in Willow Grove, PA, for 20 years. During this time Dottie enjoyed being a wonderful mother to Diane and Wayne, and became active at Grace Presbyterian Church in Jenkintown, PA, and with the PTA (Parent Teacher's Association). After relocating with Ken to The Woodlands, TX, in 1977, Dottie's enthusiasm and passion for "reaching out" to others continued in her many years of volunteering at The Woodlands Memorial Hospital and in active participation in her beloved women's service organization, PEO. Dottie and Ken were charter members of The Woodlands Community Presbyterian Church where she was a Deacon, Stephen Minister, member of the Sanctuary Guild, and always the "first in line" to lend a helping hand to almost any effort in which the church was involved or sponsoring. This passion of "service above self" was exemplified in Dottie being awarded the 2006 Interfaith of The Woodlands "Service of Excellence Award" for Senior Citizens. She was described as an inspiration and "a remarkable example of how someone can grow older without growing old and out of touch."
Dottie loved life and was a "light" to all who knew her. She was happiest when helping others and never left a room without a smile and sharing a kind word with anyone she met.
Dottie is survived by her daughter and grandson, Diane Atkins Jones and Allen Kendall Jones (AJ) of The Woodlands, TX; and her son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Donna Atkins of Newtown, PA. Dottie will be remembered as one of the most loving, caring and thoughtful individuals by her family and friends.
A celebration of Dottie's life is planned for Saturday, February 20, 2016, at 3 p.m., at the Woodlands Community Presbyterian Church, 4881 West Panther Creek Dr., The Woodlands, TX 77381. The service will be followed by a reception in Fellowship Hall.
The family requests with gratitude that contributions in Dottie's name be directed to The Woodlands Community Presbyterian Church or the Rose of Texas Hospice at 1610 Woodstead Ct., Suite 395, The Woodlands, TX 77380.
