Edith was born on August 30, 1936, and raised in Troy, New York. She graduated from St. Peter’s Catholic High School and the New York State College for Teachers (now, State University of New York, Albany).
After a short and impactful career as an elementary school teacher, she married and started a family, for which she dedicated the rest of her life. Upon her husband Jack's retirement, they moved one final time to The Woodlands, Texas, to be closer to family.
A devout and lifelong Catholic, her spirituality infused and energized her life, her family, her friends, and pretty much...everyone she encountered.
For Edith, there was always room at the table for one more person, whether it was the friends of her children and grandchildren, the spur of the moment out of town guests invited by her husband Jack craving the comfort and respite of a home cooked meal, or in the countless book groups, Bible studies, volunteer missions, Bridge, Canasta, and Mahjong clubs she belonged to over the years.
Edith died in her sleep on July 21, 2025, joining John “Jack” Lahey, her devoted husband of 64 years, and daughter Karyn Ann Lahey in peace.
She is survived by her children, John Lahey, Kellie Lahey, and Matthew Lahey & his wife Kristin (who she considered her own daughter), and her sister, Alice Dybas of Port St. Lucie, Florida. She was also the proud grandmother of Andrew Hammond (wife Justine), Owen and Oona Lahey, and great-grandchildren Dorothy and Edith Hammond.
Edith and Jack’s marriage was a love affair for the ages- through 14 moves, the raising of four children, three grandchildren, two great grandchildren, the death of a child, and many adventures throughout the world. Together, they brought their love, light, and kindness to everyone they met.
Mom (Nonnie, Grandma, and GG to the Grands and Great Grands) was easy to delight, and was our ever-present, always enthusiastic cheerleader, regardless of the size of our accomplishments.
She loved her husband, her family and friends, and she loved life. She gave us plenty of encouragement and an infinite amount of hugs and kisses.
Mass will be celebrated at St. Simon and Jude Catholic Church in The Woodlands, Texas, on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.
immediately followed by a catered reception.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Magnificat House, the parent organization of Loaves and Fishes, a ministry that she served.
