While my heart, like that of all friends and family of Elly, feels heavy at a time like this, it is also an occassion to celebrate the life of this very special person. And celebrating life she knew and did! 

As son of one of the three 'Schaffner' sisters I did not get to know her until my late teens in Europe. I knew four of the five Schaffner siblings well since childhood - Elly being the sole exception - so thought this one must surely fit in somewhere in that wide sibling spectrum. 

Little did I know, as I was to quickly find out, when my "Aunt from America" came to visit small town Germany in the late 60's. Dressed in high heels and a tight-fitting 'leopard' outfit, topped of by chique hat and sunglasses, and a "how are ya honey?" was a grand entrance unlike any I ever experienced before! As a rebellious teenager who did not fit in, I found this much to my liking! We quickly became good friends despite the generation gap.

Just a few years later, after personal family tragedy, an odyssey trip from Canada by VW bug to get away from it all, landed me and my mom (her sister Olga) in Texas in front of her place. This is when I learned of her loving and caring nature that helped us much on our healing journey. A time never forgotten with her and her gang of sons. Thank you Elly!!

Many years later we met in Florida. Riding a large and fast motor bike at the time (and still today) I was reprimanded by most for leading such a risky life-style. Well, not Elly! Much to the chagrin of her daughter Jose she asked me if we could go for a ride. Yes, mam!! That was more than cool.

And that is the aunt I do, and always will, remember ever so fondly.  I love you Elly!
