

Gene was born on May 28, 1934 in Boston, Massachusetts to parents Emil Bittrolff and Hedwig Kopp. He graduated from Boston University where he began shaping the plan that would define his life. It was in Boston that he joined The United States Air Force in 1956 beginning a long and distinguished career in service to his country.
On November 27, 1963 Gene married Dona Calhoun with whom he shared over 63 years of a lifelong partnership. Gene and Dona raised their 4 boys in a home built on a foundation of a commitment to family and excellence.
Following a 30-year career in the United States Air Force, Gene retired a full Colonel in 1985 leaving behind a legacy of exceptional service, leadership and dedication. He was a highly regarded officer in the Strategic Air Command (SAC) during a pivotal era in the history of our nation, he played a critical role throughout his remarkable career.
Gene earned numerous awards and citations in recognition of his professionalism, courage, and unwavering commitment to duty. He was the recipient of the Legion of Merit Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, 3 Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal - Korea, and Air Force Longevity Service Award with six Oak Leaf Clusters.
Gene was preceded in death by sons Robert Allen Bittrolff and Gene Thomas (Geno) Bittrolff. He is survived by son Russ and Sonja Bittrolff (div) and son Michael, Jon and Michelle Bittrolff and daughter Hannah and son Brody, Nancy Bittrolff (wife of Robert) and daughter Keri and sons Nick, Karl, and Kory and great grandchild Charlotte, and Tia Bittrolff (wife of Geno) and daughter Ashley and son Alex.
Beyond Gene's military accomplishments, he will be remembered for his strength of character, devotion to family, and lasting impact on all who had the privilege of serving alongside him. His life stands as a testament to honor, service, and excellence, and his legacy will endure in the lives he touched and the nation he faithfully served.
A Committal Service will be held at Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home & Cemetery, 18000 Interstate 45 S, The Woodlands, TX 77384, US, on April 30, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:30 am.
