Born on March 7, 1943, Harry was the first of four children born to Robert and Caroline Herwig, in Rahway, New Jersey. After earning a Bachelor's degree from the Newark College of Engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology and a Master's from The University of Houston, both in Electrical Engineering, Harry had a fulfilling career in Engineering Management that included moves to Florida, London, England, and Texas.
Most notably, Harry worked for Boeing and contracted to NASA for several Apollo Space Missions. He worked on a team that was responsible for calculating the amount of fuel remaining on each space voyage and ensuring the route back to Earth's landing point was still possible. For Apollo 11, the moon landing that notably brought back moon rocks, he earned the Apollo Achievement Award. Harry was awarded the Snoopy Pin by the NASA Apollo 13 Mission Astronauts when his team worked tirelessly to reroute the potentially doomed spaceship back safely following a new course based on remaining fuel. His award, Snoopy Pin, and personal letter of thanks from NASA Astronaut Alan Shepard, were highly treasured items and memories.
Harry's next big adventure was working in London where he met his wife of 41 years, Sheila. Calling her his Mary Poppins as she was "practically perfect in every way," they married on May 18, 1985, and welcomed daughter, Amanda, while living in the UK. The family of three then moved to The Woodlands, TX, in the Spring of 1988. Harry enjoyed golfing with friends and coworkers and spending time with family. His natural inclination for engineering also gave way to an interest in sports cars and gave him an affinity to happily and easily help others accomplish handyman tasks- as well as school science projects! He and Sheila enjoyed attending Woodlands Church and volunteered as nursery helpers and bulletin stuffers. After becoming a grandfather, Harry loved visiting his three beloved grandchildren and treasured their artwork frequently gifted to him.
Harry is survived by his loving wife, Sheila Herwig, and daughter Amanda and husband Fletcher Daniels, and grandchildren Georgiana, Callan, and Margot. He is survived by brothers Bruce and Ken Herwig, sister Caroline Barnes, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
Harry is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Caroline.
Harry, your love will live on in the memories we will cherish forever.
