Our mom was blessed to have 94 yrs on this earth. During her life, Helen was a cherished daughter, a sister to 7 siblings, an aunt to several nieces & nephews, a wife, a mother, a grandmother to two grandsons and a bonus grandson, a “Downey mom” to all our friends and friend to everyone she met.
Helen was born in Rockford, Illinois, the oldest girl of 8 children. Helen pursued a degree in Nursing and along with a few of her gal pal’s, moved to CA to pursue her career further. It was here in CA she met the love of her life, John. They met at a beach mixer. They had a quick courtship and were married in October 1960. They quickly set down roots in the idyllic city of Downey, California. In October 1963, they welcomed their first son, James. He was the first child to turn this couple into a family. James enjoyed the spotlight for 6 years until his first of two sisters arrived. Ann joined the family in November 1969 via adoption and then Katy’s arrival in March 1972 rounded it up to a family of 5.
Helen maintained her nursing license, but focused on being a stay at home mom for several years. She was ever present at all her children’s events (school plays, sporting events, cub scouts, Indian guides, brownies, girl scouts, mother/daughter luncheons, awards ceremonies, graduations, music recitals). She was our biggest cheerleader alongside our dad and the other “Downey Mom’s & Dads”. As us kids grew older, our mom wanted to get back to what she loved – Nursing. She began working for an Allergist – a job should would hold for over 30 years. She loved helping people – it was her calling and one that she answered enthusiastically. Her patients adored her and became lifelong friends.
Our mom was all about Family. She would always say, “Family is everything” and “be good to each other”. She truly was the heartbeat of our family. She wasn’t very outspoken, but there was never a question who the driving force was in our family. She was the one who made sure everything ran smoothly behind the scenes. Everything she did, every decision she made was for her family. Our mom and dad truly gave us a magical childhood. It’s sometimes hard to explain the “Downey” phenomenon….why we called our moms the “Downey mom’s”. It was just something special. All our moms parented us all. And as we all got older, moved away and came back for visits – we didn’t just see our friends, we included our moms in our get togethers or made visits to all the Downey mom’s who raised us.
In 2020, as our mom & dad got older, we made the decision to move them from Downey to Spring, TX to be closer to us girls. It was the best decision ever. We were now able to help care for them, see them daily, share every holiday & birthday with them. They were able to see more of their grandchildren. Our mom loved being with all three of her children again. Mom had fun learning and embracing all things Texas. She loved Tex Mex food and enjoyed a good Margarita or glass of wine.
We are blessed to have spent the last 5 years with our mom. There were times we were overwhelmed with caring for our dad, her and our brother, but as mom would always say – family takes care of family. There was so much laughter, so many tears, but love was always at the heart of it all. She was amazing in all ways. She was caring, giving, loving, generous, good, decent and just the embodiment of what a loving mother should be.
Rest in Peace Mom and thank you for just being a wonderful human being. You made the world a better place. We will love and miss everything about you!
