Jane was born on September 17, 1928, in Canandaigua, New York, and was raised on the family homestead in Manchester, New York. She earned her nursing diploma from Rochester General Hospital. She was a courageous woman who was ahead of her time. She cared for tuberculosis patients, risking contracting the incurable disease herself. Patients and staff slept on outdoor porches in freezing New York winter temperatures in an attempt to fight the disease. That same courage led her to leave her childhood home and move on her own to Houston, where she was one of the three original nurses hired by the newly opened Texas Children’s Hospital. It was there that she met the love of her life, John (Jack) Johnson. She traveled with him during his pipeline career before they settled in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, where they raised four boys. In 1979, they moved back to Houston, and made their home there surrounded by family and friends.
Jane was a devoted Christian and a long-time member of Northwoods Presbyterian Church. She was a descendant of William Bradford and a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, as well as the Daughters of the American Revolution. She volunteered with a singing group that entertained residents of nursing homes. She and Jack loved to travel, both in the United States and abroad, but most of their trips and time were devoted to visiting and caring for family, especially her beloved grandchildren.
Her door was always open to loved ones, and her home was filled with laughter and warmth. Her tireless devotion to family, her graciousness and generosity, and her gift of enthusiastic hospitality touched all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
Jane was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, John Edwell Johnson; her son, Daniel Alan Johnson; her grandson, Carl Browning Johnson; her parents, Marion Sarah Rice Crowell and Roscoe Browning Crowell; and her siblings, Dorothy Proctor, Gordon Crowell, and Marjory Ruth (Ruthie) Peters.
She is survived by her son, Brian Lee Johnson, his spouse, Gail, and their children, Heather Ramirez and Sara Main; her son, David Scott Johnson, his spouse, Elizabeth, and their daughter, Kristen Johnson; her son, Dean Johnson, his spouse, Kathy, and their children, Jessica Oakes and Jeffrey Johnson; and her daughter-in-law, Yvonne Johnson, and Daniel and Yvonne’s children, Elize Faflik, Alex Johnson, and Katie Sprague, as well as many beloved great-grandchildren.
