Johnny boyyyyy that’s what I always called you, and you’d turn around with that big smile that could light up anyone’s day. You called me your little sis, and that’s exactly how you made me feel like the little sister you always looked out for. You were the brother I never had but always needed.

I still remember when you told me you were moving  I was so, so sad because all of us selfishly wanted you to stay home with us. You had such a genuine soul, the kindest heart, and you were a protector to everyone you loved, but especially the women in your life especially your mom. You’d just talk so highly of her and I always thought that was so beautiful but that’s  just who you were born in California but with the heart of a true Southern gentleman.

Your one year is coming up, and I still keep your picture from your memorial in my car. When things get quiet, I can feel you there beside me, still looking out for me. I always feel safe because of you. I miss you so much and wish I could tell you about life and hear all the stories you never got the chance to share.

John, you are so loved and so deeply missed. My heart breaks every time I think about you not being here. Me and Rally love you forever. Rally misses the brothers. ❤️

John was my first kiss, back in middle school. He would walk me home from school, and it became routine for us to visit this beautiful hill near my house, a grassy slope with a couple of oak trees spotted around it. The view was incredible, looking out over the hills and houses in Coto. We would sit down on our backpacks, talking, listening to the birds, and watching the clouds. He always made me laugh. The noise of the world faded away. One day he placed his hand on my cheek and kissed me. My little teenage heart liked him so much, and was so nervous that I started shaking. I told him outright, “I think I’m having a panic attack.” I thought to myself, “How embarrassing? This boy is never going to talk to me again.” I couldn’t have been more wrong. He treated me with such grace, kindness, and compassion. He told me everything was okay, and we sat there, his arms around me, for a long while. John was the definition of a gentleman, and at such a young age… I wish we hadn’t drifted apart over the years. I’ll never forget him. His voice, his smile, his heart. He was the kindest young man I’d ever known. We couldn’t have been older than 14 at the time; he was wise beyond his years. John was always so handsome and charming. Even years later when I saw him, I felt like that nervous young girl again. Yet I’d always felt safe around him. I think many people felt that way with him. He was a fierce defender of those he cared for. It’s been a decade since that day, and I’m in tears while recollecting it. We both moved to different states, and I wish I had done more to stay in touch with him. But I wanted to share this story, because even though we hadn’t talked in years, myself and so many others will always carry a piece of him in our hearts and our memories. John, you were truly one of a kind. I still dream of you sometimes, sitting on that hill. I cannot imagine the pain of your family’s loss, and I hope this story shines another light on how gentle and kind you were.

Dear Paula and Sean, I am so sorry and hurt for your loss.  It has been many years but I do treasure the time spent in our times together In little league baseball. He was a fine young man on and off the field. My prayers are for you and family

Dear Reis Family,

My family and I are childhood friends and former neighbors of Paula.  We are saddened by the news of John's passing and send our sincere condolences and sympathy.  Although we never had the privilege of meeting John, our hearts go out to the Reis family during this difficult time.    May John's memory be eternal. May you all be comforted by cherished memories of John and your love for him and his love for you.   May peace and blessings be upon you and may God rest John's soul in eternal peace.

John was such a kind soul with the biggest heart. He put everyone first before himself and he knew how to always light up a room. From chasing each other when we were kids, to all the happy moments he created for not just me, but everyone surrounding him. He will be missed. 

John, you are so missed. I enjoyed everyone moment I had with you. Thank you for being such a bright light. We all miss your goofy laugh! The love you had for your family, especially your mom was so prevalent. May you rest on the wings like eagles.

The best memories with John are playing baseball! He was my favorite catcher and I loved pitching to him. Off the field John was a big brother to me showing me all kinds of awesome new things. I’m so shocked and sadden by this news I thought I’d always have the chance to see him again. Rest Easy in Paradise Snackbar!
