

He was born March 09, 1927 in Joliet, Illinois and after graduation served in the Army Air Corp as a corporal technician in WWII, serving in the Philippines. He returned home to Joliet for one year of college at Lewis College of Aeronautics. Later he entered the U. S. Air Force Cadet Pilot Training program and graduated as a pilot in 1949. He resigned his 1st Lieutenant commission in 1954 to pursue a career as a commercial airlines pilot. In April,1955, he joined Trans Texas Airways as a co-pilot. The airline eventually evolved into Texas International Airlines, Inc. and Joe became a captain in 1956. He retired from the airlines in 1986 and became a full-time fisherman.
Joe met Earlene Gerlich in Pasadena, Texas in October, 1950 and they were later married in April, 1951. Earlene was a registered nurse and passed away in August, 2015 after 64 years of marriage. Joe was a devoted caregiver to our Mom, even after she was moved to a personal care home where she remained until the date of her death.
Joe is survived by his daughters: Susan Heffner and husband Jimmy, Cindy Clark and husband Lindsay. Grandchildren: Matthew Clark and wife Heather, Brandon Clark and wife Lauren. He has three great grandchildren: Charlotte, Justin, and Beckham Clark. He was the second youngest of eight children born to Andrew and Irene Bakos Sari who had immigrated from Hungary.
The family will receive friends at a visitation to be held at Forest Park Funeral Home in the Woodlands on Friday morning, July 21, 2023 from 9 till 10, with a Celebration of Life to begin at 10 a.m. Interment will follow the service at the cemetery. Following Dad's services, a luncheon will be served at the Honor Cafe in Conroe, Texas located at 103 N. Thompson St. The Honor Cafe was Joe's favorite hangout every Thursday for breakfast.
The family would like to offer a tremendous note of gratitude to Tamara, Avery, Cora and Jason McCartney, for their dedication in caring for Joe's dog, Miss Fred, and for assisting in the care of Papa Joe as he aged in place at home. We appreciate their love and compassion beyond measure ~ we were all truly blessed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Honor Cafe, % Chris Sadler, 103 N. Thompson St, Conroe, TX 77301, For the benefit of Veterans meals. Special recognition goes to the staff at Village Care Homes for their kindnesses and their exceptional and compassionate care of Dad. Additionally, the family would like to thank Hannah and Tiffany with Devotion Hospice.
In honor of Joe and his devotion to the Houston Astros, we welcome you at his service in your favorite Astros garb, should you so desire.
